Parents of National Third-Year Student in New Taipei City Neck-slashing Case Speak Out Against Abolishing Death Penalty; Taipei City Councilor Wang Hsinyi Shares Personal Tragedy of Sister Brutally Murdered at 19 – 39 Stabs Inflicted by Pursuer; Advocates Against Abolishing Death Penalty, Stating: 'The Pain of Losing a Loved One Cannot Be Compensated by the Death of the Perpetrator – a Pain We Must Carry for a Lifetime.
In a heartfelt account, Wang Hsinyi reminisces about her sister, who was a year and a half older, describing their close bond like that of inseparable confidantes. She admired her sister's beauty, talent, and empathy, envisioning a vibrant future for her, perhaps as a successful star on the stage. However, this idyllic vision shattered when, at the age of 19, her sister's life was brutally taken by a male classmate who had been secretly infatuated with her. The assailant, unable to win her love, stabbed her 39 times, abruptly ending her promising life.
Recalling the painful experience, Wang Hsinyi, then a high school sophomore, had to identify her sister's mutilated body. Witnessing the transformation of her vibrant sister into a lifeless corpse left her emotionally devastated. "On that day, it felt like a part of me died forever," she expressed, not to mention the anguish endured by her distraught parents, who aged overnight, their hair turning white.
Wang Hsinyi argues that those who advocate for abolishing the death penalty fail to comprehend the agony of innocent victims like her sister, brutally killed by 39 stabs. They also fail to understand the nightly tears shed by the families living in a hellish existence. Sharing her painful memories is her responsibility as a victim's family member, and she feels obligated to express her stance against abolishing the death penalty.
While acknowledging that the pain of losing a loved one cannot be compensated by the death of the perpetrator, she emphasizes the need for justice and fairness for the victim's family and society as a whole. Without the elimination of these demons, the general public remains in constant fear, as no one knows who might become the next victim.
It's worth noting that Wang Hsinyi's sister, Wang Wanyi, was murdered by her secret admirer, who is now a well-known actor, Dino Tai. Reflecting on the incident, Dino Tai has spoken about the emotional turmoil he went through, learning about his girlfriend's tragic death while serving in the military. He struggled with his emotions and spent over a decade trying to come to terms with the tragedy, acknowledging that the memories will forever be a part of him.
